There are two predominant strains of monkeypox: the West African strain and the Congo Basin strain. Of the two, the Congo Basin strain has historically spread more easily from person-to-person and caused more deaths.
The Congo Basin strain kills up to 10% of those infected, but the recent outbreak appears to only involve the West African strain, which in past outbreaks had a fatality rate of about 1%.
